Consider Carefully Before You Buy An Off-grid System
Solar energy generation varies by time of year, and so does appliance usage. Many homeowners elect to reduce their off grid solar system investment by using “Energy Management” particularly during periods when their solar installation is underproducing (e.g., winter months)
Energy Management can involve three components: 1) not running all appliances at the same time so that demand does not exceed inverter capability; 2) limiting the use of energy consuming appliances to conserve batteries; and 3) more frequent use of the generator to supplement the solar production.
Energy Management fits with many people’s lifestyle but is a burden for others. It is important to determine your life style preferences before committing to a solar system which is smaller than your forecast requirements.
The good news is that all of the systems we install in Coconino, Yavapai and Mohave Counties are field upgradable. Even though the total cost will be a little higher, a buy small and upgrade later strategy can help meet the move-in budget with only a temporary impact on life style.
